This workshop will provide an overview of the group supervision. Several different models will be introduced including an adaptation of reflecting team supervision and participants will have to use different approaches. Additionally, the ethical issues unique to group supervision will be addressed along with discussion of group supervision contracts. An ethics game and case discussions will illuminate the ethical complexities of this type of supervision. Cases include supervision of both family therapy and addiction professionals. The workshop is both didactic and experiential.

Objectives:

Participants will learn about the specific types of supervision groups; their benefits and challenges.

Participants will be given an opportunity to practice different group supervision models with emphasis on multiple perspectives.

Participants will learn and discuss legal issues and ethical complexities of providing group supervision and apply this learning to case examples.

Outline of workshop:

8:30 – 9:30       Overview of group supervision: Benefits, drawbacks and dynamics

9:30 – 10:30    Models of group supervision and Five Thinking Hats experiential exercise

10:30 – 10:40  Break

10:40 – 11:00  Use of Reflecting team in supervision

11:00 – Noon  Experiential exercise using reflecting team

Noon – 12:50  Lunch

12:50 – 1:50    Overview of ethical complexities of group supervision

1:50 – 2:00      Break

2:00 – 2:45      Ethics game. This “game” generates discussion among small groups about the potential legal and ethical challenges that can emerge in group supervision. Different vignettes will be presented, and the small group will consider how they would handle the vignette

2:45 – 3:35      Ethical Case discussions. In a small group format, 6 different cases will be distributed, and the small group will be given a list of questions to answer about the ethical implications of each case. They will then present their case to the larger group with their corresponding suggestions
